At the time I was sent to the hospital I was a good 2 cm and 90% effaced. By the time I was hooked up to the monitors and had an IV it was about 12:30pm. The doctor checks me one more time and starts the pitocin and breaks my water. The next couple of hours aren't too bad but by 2:45/3pm I am literally crying due to the pain! I will admit that I am a wimp and have a negative tolerance for pain! The other unfortunate thing is I threw up and not my lunch from earlier. Needless to say I was way ready for the epidural. So our nurse who is pregnant and due at the end of month calls the doctor. I was a little more than 3cm, and she go ahead and get it. Actually getting the epidural no problem, it didn't hurt at all. Once the epidural kicked in, it was smooth sailing for the next few hours. Our 1st nurse was the best and talked me through all the contractions and kept us updated as to how baby girl was doing. The doctor came in around 4 and I was at 4-5cm, 90% and -1 station. I feel asleep soon after that! I slept for about 2 hours and woke up with a sharp pain in my right side. After talking to our wonderful 1st nurse she said I was maxed out on the epidural drugs and it was probably Parker's elbow or something and that epidural's don't help bone on bone pain. After another 20 minutes I was in some serious pain. It was like if you cut me in half long ways my bottom side (butt, back, etc) didn't hurt no pain, but my top half, (stomach, etc) was in some serious pain. The doctor came in and checked and I was 9 1/2 cm, I had progressed 4cm in just over an hour! The doctor said she would come back in about 30 minutes to check! By this time our lovely, wonderful first nurse had left and our new not so hot 2nd nurse was there. She just wasn't very personable and very business like. Anyway I was in some serious pain and was watching the clock like a hawk, and when 30 minutes came and went I was like where is this doctor!! Our not so hot 2nd nurse looks over and says oh you can push any time you want...what...why didn't you say so sooner!! So Richard and I are like okay let's push and the nurse just stands there charting or whatever she was doing. Hello, first time parents here... no idea what to do...Finally she comes over and helps us out!
Pushing began around 7:30pm. Pushing helped with the pain to start with and made it much better. The doctor finally came in after 15 minutes of pushing to check things. She actually seemed surprised we had only been pushing for 15 minutes. She thinks things are going well and leaves. Remember what I said about how they couldn't find Parker's heart rate while at the doctors office? Well they were having the same trouble again! This 2nd nurse was having to move the monitor all around to pick up her heart rate...so Richard asks if that is pretty normal....what does our not so hot 2nd nurse say...it's probably just the cord wrapped around her neck! She must have seen the sheer look of terror on our faces and quickly adds that's it's fairly normal for that to happen.
So about an hour into pushing our not so hot 2nd nurse doesn't look to happy. She checks me and then goes over the monitor and charts some things. Then she picks up the phone and we hear her ask for Dr. Moody. She then says I need her to view these charts ASAP! About 20 minutes later Dr Moody comes in and stays this time. Neither she nor the not so hot 2nd nurse say anything scary to us, but you can tell by their facial expressions, that things aren't how they want them! So here I am first time mom, seeing looks of concern on my dr and nurses faces trying to push. There were a few times, I think Dr. Moody got frustrated with me and had to tell me I was pushing wrong. When I would get it right she would ask if I could tell a difference...unfortunately it all felt the same to me. At one point Richard has seen Parker's head during one of my pushes and asks how much farther Parker had to go, like one inch? The Dr literally laughs out loud at him and says no! So about 1 hour and 45 minutes into pushing Parker has finally come down and part of her head up to her ear is out! What is Robin doing at this point? Experiencing some severe pain ( if my epidural worked, I would never had made it through a natural birth!!) and what does the doctor tell me to do....nothing...don't push until the next contraction...what don't push are you crazy!! Finally the next contraction comes and out pops her head, two more pushes and Parker has arrived!! She was born at 9:21pm she was 9 lbs even and 21 inches long! It seriously was like instant relief, I was in no more pain....well not until the doctor informs me that I tore pretty bad and she started stitching me up!
The sad news is that I believe the doctor was way more concerned than she let on. Parker was healthy as she could be, but they didn't even ask if Richard wanted to cut the cord! They did it all and immediately checked her out! I'm glad she was healthy but sad Richard didn't get to experience in something as special as cutting the cord!
Parker was the best gift I could have asked for and when it's all said and done, I would go through the whole experience, pain and all several times over as long as she is my gift when it's over!
